The work
The Old Custom House had been mothballed for years behind a fine but tired classical façade. The refurbishment keeps and repairs everything worth keeping — the stone frontage, the cast-iron columns, the top-lit stair hall — and quietly rebuilds everything behind it as open, serviced floorplates.
New services run in a raised floor and a slim perimeter zone so the ornate ceilings stay clear of ductwork. A discreet rooftop plant enclosure, set well back from the parapet, keeps the historic silhouette intact from the quay.
The building reopened fully let, with the ground floor given over to a public café and gallery.
