The work
Pennine Ridge is a 17-span masonry viaduct carrying a live route across an upland valley. Decades of water ingress had softened the fill and cracked the spandrels, so the works replace the deck waterproofing, stitch the arches and rebuild the parapets.
Access is the whole job. A bespoke under-deck gantry lets crews work beneath the track between services, and material is winched from a single valley-floor compound to keep the surrounding fells and watercourses undisturbed. Possessions are tightly booked and handed back on time, every time.
The viaduct stays open to traffic throughout; the programme is currently past its halfway point.
